What does it mean,
that Veterio is
a referral clinic?

October 18, 2024

Veterio is a referral clinic (from referral hospital), which means that it accepts patients referred by other veterinary facilities that may not have the resources at home to provide diagnosis or treatment in all areas of specialty. This works similarly to referral(from referral) in human medicine, where a patient receives a referral from a primary care physician to a specialist or for advanced testing. This model of cooperation allows veterinary practices, clinics and clinics to use the specialists and modern equipment that Veterio has, according to the needs of their patients.

Referral system
Below are the different types of referrals that can be made at Veterio:

Referral for diagnostic tests
Often, referral facilities do not have the necessary equipment to perform advanced tests, such as computed tomography (CT),magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), but also ultrasound, heart echo or X-ray. In such cases, veterinarians can refer the patient to Veterio for testing to enable them to make an accurate diagnosis.

Referral for specific treatments and/orsurgeries
Advanced surgical treatments and surgeries, oxygen therapy or fluid therapy, require specialized skills, conditions and equipment that are not available at every facility. In such cases, animals may be referred to Veterio for these procedures and then returned to their home facility for further treatment.

Referral for overnight or weekend care
Veterio operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making us an ideal place to provide overnight or weekend care for patients who require continuous observation and treatment but are stable. Veterio is an excellent place to provide continuity of such care during hours when the referring clinic is closed. After a stay at Veterio, such patients are transferred back to the referring facility, which continues treatment during its hours of operation.

Emergency(from Emergency)
In an emergency, patients can be referred to Veterio, as a referral clinic, to the emergency room and intensive care unit, where immediate stabilization measures are taken, followed by treatment if possible. Once the intervention is completed, the patient, in stable condition, returns to his or her home facility for further care by the referring physician.

Specialized consultations
Some facilities may not have access to specialists in specific fields, such as surgery, oncology, cardiology or dermatology. In such cases, it is possible to refer a patient for a consultation at Veterio, where our specialists can make an accurate diagnosis and offer appropriate treatment.

Veterio’s referral clinic plays a key role in the animal health system, allowing patients at all veterinary facilities within Veterio’s coverage area to access advanced diagnostics and specialized treatment. Through a referral system, pets can receive the best possible care and return to their home clinic after treatment. Veterio does not offer care for “first-line” services, i.e. initial diagnosis, basic medical procedures such as spaying and neutering, or preventive care such as vaccinations, deworming, tick protection, etc.
